Gliese 581c - The First 'Earth-like' Planet Discovered
This is one of the most intriguing exoplanets discovered in the constellation of Libra, initially thought to lie within the star’s habitable zone. However, further research has suggested that its atmosphere may be too dense, creating a runaway greenhouse effect like Venus. 581c gained interest from astronomers because it was reported to be the first potentially Earth-like planet in the habitable zone of its star, with a temperature right for liquid water on its surface, and by extension, potentially capable of supporting extremophile forms of Earth-like life.

First images of the surface of Gliese 581 C
On the first panorama off the surface of the planet, which has 5 times the weight of the earth, we can clearly see forms of vegetation. The sky, colored by the system's red dwarf 'sun' Gliese 581, shows evidence of a faint atmosphere. This is a rocky, smallish planet — about five Earth masses — that makes a full trip around the red dwarf every 15 days.
This is the first planet found by humans that can support liquid water and harbor life, scientists recently announced.
